ed to a value of some 200,000 Mexican Dollars, while the im-

ports of the same article for the 12 months from the latter

date to June 1901 are estimated to reach a million Mexican

Dollars.

Butter and cheese are also imported, and

an endeavour has been made to introduce Canadian flour which

has however failed only because the United States can put

that article on the market here at a lower figure.

Moreover I would draw attention to the

fact that HongKong can no longer be regarded as a non-manu

facturing country. She now manufactures cotton yarn, cement,

rope, refined sugar, and preserved ginger in quantities which

are very largely exported, besides various articles in a less-

er degree such as rattan ware, vermillion, matting etc.

As I have previously stated I consider

Canada's action in excluding HongKong from the preferential tariff an injustice, for the removal of which I venture to

hope for your good offices.
